Our Fatherland

We live for today
Not for the past
Or for the future
But for today, really
So, we obey
Since, if we died
would we be remembered?
And, if so
would we be remembered for long?
Possibly not

We wander on
down the road

We don’t always know
what we want
but we take what we get
We’re like scavengers that way
like crows by the road
Sure, we are smart
but we don’t always know

We wander on
down the road

We, wanderers
want a home

Beauty
There’s something
We see a bird, a flower, a structure
and comment about it
or not
and wander on
And warmth and love
Those are nice things
Everybody appreciates them
And significance
And comfort
We can’t go long without those
Lord! How we need those!
On the road
Life’s a road

We wander on
down the road

As long as there’s a road
we keep going

Food, shelter, comfort
significance, even beauty
We need lots of things
Air, water, clothing

We wander on
down the road

And things seem strange
since things have changed
We, wanderers, want a home
We need a home
We’ve got a home
We’re on our way
